UPDATED:(July 7, 2009)
Well, it looks like I’m swallowing my foot on this iPhone 3GS battery issue. Two days ago I discovered that I had not enabled push. I hadn’t noticed earlier as I’m pretty compulsive at checking my inbox. It turns out, that with Push now running and Fetch set to 30 min intervals, my 3GS battery is getting mauled. In my defence however, it still seems better than my 3G.

I know that the Push feature has always been a cause of increased battery drain. It turns out that the new, smaller and lighter battery in 3GS is noticeably inferior to that of the iPhone 3G.

I’ve been reading a lot of comments about the poor battery life people are experiencing on the iPhone 3G after the 3.0 update. People are reporting that battery life on the 3G is worse than when the phone initially launched, back in June 2008.

I can’t accurately comment on the 3G battery life running OS 3.0 as I’m one of the million plus people that picked up a 32GB iPhone 3GS when they came out and dumped my 3G on ebay.

As is the case with any Apple product, it takes them a while to work out the kinks, and the iPhone is no exception. In my opinion, the 3GS is almost perfect, but it did take them 3 tries and almost a dozen OS updates to get it to this point.

The battery life on the iPhone 3GS is incredible. Lasting me between 2-3 days before I have to charge it up, and that’s with pretty heavy use. I average about 3000 talk minutes/month and about 300MB of data transfer. I use my iPhone for work, so I am constantly proofing large PDFs and using other apps, like WinAdmin to remote manage offsite servers and FTP to track uploads and file transfers.

In short, I love the 3GS. It’s fast and the battery life is great. For those of you still using your iPhone 3G with the 3.0 upgrade… Basically, you’re driving a car that looks like a Ferrari but is sportin’ a Hyundai engine.

If you’re a business user, or a speed freak, I highly recommend the 3GS upgrade.
